LONDON — Belvoir & Wren, the lifestyle house known for its by-invitation salons and quietly guarded guest list, today announced the opening of its first private members' townhouse, a six-storey Georgian residence on a Mayfair garden square. Membership is capped, deliberately, at three hundred.

Behind an unmarked black door, the townhouse offers a library bar, a first-floor dining room seating no more than twenty, a rooftop conservatory, and a fitting salon shared with a resident tailor. There is no signage, no photography, and — the house is keen to stress — no application form that can simply be downloaded.

“We were not trying to build the largest club in London,” said Arabella Fenwick-Vane, founding director of Belvoir & Wren. “We were trying to build the one where the doorman already knows how you take your coffee. Everything else follows from that.”

Members will have access to the house's calendar of private views, cellar dinners and seasonal escapes, curated by a committee the house declines to name. Founding members are invited by existing members only; a small number of places each year are held, the house says, “for people who are interesting rather than merely eligible.”

The Mayfair townhouse is the first of three planned residences, with houses in the countryside and by the sea to follow. Belvoir & Wren confirmed the openings but, in keeping with habit, would not say where.
